Kate & Tim

How we met

Kate was in Boston for the weekend visiting friends a few weeks before Christmas in December of 2011. Tim was living in Boston at the time. The original plan was that Kate’s friend, who was at her work holiday party, would meet up with her after she was done with her work party and Kate was done having dinner with another mutual friend of both Kate and Tim (shoutout to Billy). After dinner, Kate was unable to get ahold of her friend (shoutout to alcohol) and Billy had a party to go to and invited Kate to come along with him.

At the party Billy introduced Tim to Kate as Alli’s sister. Tim was happy to meet Kate, and the first words he said to her were “oh, hey, do you like bologna too?” Kate begrudgingly laughed and said no. (Kate claims that she was confused and immediately regretted being introduced to Tim, however, her actions speak otherwise). Tim and Kate spent some time chatting, it turned out they were chatting for quite awhile as they realized everyone else had moved on to playing a game on the other side of the room. (Kate claims that she has not seen Tim’s conversational skills since then. This is possible).

While they were talking, Tim asked Kate to try a spinach pinwheel as he had made a batch of them for the party but she politely declined because she was “still full from dinner.” Tim claims she has never been “full from dinner” since. Tim asked Kate to try one several more times, but she refused. He still holds a grudge and has refused to make them again since then. In addition to the pinwheels, they talked about traveling and a recent trip Tim took to visit another mutual friend (shoutout to Katie).

Later they rejoined the group, Kate’s friend surfaced, and they went their separate ways.

The next day Kate talked to Katie to let her know that she met a few friends that she had heard of but never met, including Tim. Katie was excited to hear that and said, in true Katie fashion, “what did you think of Tim?”

Also in true Katie fashion, she called Tim immediately and told him they should start dating (she also suggested this to Kate). After some rigamarole, she gave Kate’s phone number to Tim, he contacted her, and Kate invited Tim to join her and her friends later that evening.

At the time, Kate was still living in New York and looking for a job (a theme that would continue over the course of their relationship). Kate and Tim reminded one another that they still existed intermittently over the next month or so, seeing each other a few times while Kate was interviewing in Boston and subsequently looking for an apartment.

In February, Kate found a job and moved to Boston and the rest is history. Kate still doesn’t eat bologna and Tim still hasn't made the spinach pinwheels.

How we got engaged

Kate and Tim took a long weekend trip to Mexico City the weekend of Tim’s birthday in February/March of 2018.

Tim was hoping to have an opportunity to propose while they were there but was not sure if/when it could work as, in typical fashion, they hadn’t planned an itinerary (other than a few restaurant reservations) in advance.

The morning they arrived (Thursday), while walking to breakfast, Tim and Kate walked through a nice park in the Condessa neighborhood of the city and Tim knew that he had found the spot. Since it was close to their hotel, and they had a reservation at a very nice restaurant on Friday night for dinner, Tim figured he’d find a way to get them back there on Friday afternoon.

On Friday, after spending the morning hiking the pyramids, a long bus and cab ride back to the city, a prolonged caffeine headache, and a quick lunch, Tim suggested that they take a walk before getting ready for dinner. Tim grabbed his backpack, they walked to the park, found a nice quiet place to sit, had some awkward small talk, and then he popped the question.
